Water Gardens

Water gardens first originated in ancient Egypt when the Egyptians channeled water from the Nile into their palace gardens. In their water gardens they primarily grew lotuses a primary source of medicine and a plant considered to be sacred. In an excavation of the tomb of Ramses II in 1881 lotus petals were discovered around his coffin suggesting that they used these lotuses 5,000 years ago.
The Persians were next to have water gardens copying their designs onto their Persian rugs so that they could be enjoyed even in the winter. The Greeks also had water gardens and included effigies of their gods in them thus introducing statuary into water gardens. The Japanese and Chinese created their water gardens to be places of contemplation and reflection.
During the Italian Renaissance water gardens were modernized and were built with stones and could be found in cites. They were used to add to the architectural features and were like pools.
Today there are many different types of water gardens from the elaborate water gardens at conservatories to the more simple homemade ones in our backyards consisting of materials from MenardsĀ®. No matter what kind you have they can be relaxing and invigorating and are a beautiful addition to any garden.
